Is the Noble prize really NOBLE ?

(OPINIONS & RESPONSES)

I have featured the story of Irene Sendler in an early presentation (http://b-inet.com/sammy/holocausthero/irena/). At that time Irene had just passed away. I was unaware that she was nominated for the noble peace award.

Foreword

I  am not sure how  completely opposite personalities end up contesting for a noble prize in the same category. And even if they did, were there not enough creative minds at the noble prize committee who could create another one to give to a truly deserving soul. This puts the credibility of the selection committee in a bad light  as they were unable to make the right decision on who truly deserved this noble prize if there was only one left to be awarded. Al Gore would have been equally honored to be nominated and not having won. It is noteworthy that this is not Al's fault at all.

Even so I have great respect for those who have endured to do the right thing and did not do so for the recognition that they would have received from the media or such man made awards that are some what biased in nature. The prize for humanity goes to her and all those people including those families that risked their personal safety to shelter these children who were otherwise doomed under Nazi control.

The noble prize is a determination made by a small number of people for the life long achievements of a person/group who have proved  the effectiveness of their tireless work and contribution to society. Hence it should not be given too much attention despite its prestigious status.

On October 19, 1965, Yad Vashem organization  (Israel) recognized Irena Sendler as Righteous Among the Nations. The tree planted in her honor stands at the entrance to the Avenue of the Righteous Among the Nations.

In 2007, Irena was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize but was not selected.
Al Gore won - for a slide show on Global Warming!

My confidence in the Noble prize was lost in 1998 when a certain terrorist who was responsible for putting bombs in school buses was awarded the Noble "PEACE"  prize.

You Be The JUDGE!!!

The person who saved 2500 children during Nazi occupation of Poland.
versus
The person who created a slide show about Global Waring *

(* many serious claims made are just theories contested by many scientist who oppose them due to lack of proof)

Background :

The prize doesn't always go to the most deserving.

In May 2008, a 98 year-old Polish lady named Irena Sendler died.

During WWII, she got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist but she had a good motive..   She KNEW of the Nazi's plans for the Jews.  Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and, in the back of her truck, she had a burlap sack for the larger children.

She also kept a dog in the back of the truck that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.  The soldiers wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the noise of the children.

She managed to smuggle out and save 2,500 children before she was caught; the Nazis broke both her legs and her arms and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the children that she smuggled out which she kept in a glass jar buried under a tree in her back yard.

After the War, she tried to locate any parents that had survived and reunited the families.  Most, of course, had been gassed but she helped those children to be placed into foster family homes or adopted.

In September 1943, four months after the Warsaw ghetto was completely destroyed, Sendler was appointed director of Zegota’s Department for the Care of Jewish Children. Sendler, whose underground name was Jolanta, exploited her contacts with orphanages and institutes for abandoned children, to send Jewish children there. Many of the children were sent to the Rodzina Marii (Family of Mary) Orphanage in Warsaw, and to religious institutions run by nuns in nearby Chomotow, and in Turkowice, near Lublin. The exact number of children saved by Sendler and her partners is unknown.

In 2007, Irena was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize but was not selected. Al Gore won - for a slide show on Global Warming!

The Nobel Prize

On 27 November 1895, a year before his death, Alfred Nobel signed the famous will which would implement some of the goals to which he had devoted so much of his life. Nobel stipulated in his will that most of his estate, more than SEK 31 million (today approximately SEK 1,600 million) should be converted into a fund and invested in "safe securities."

The income from the investments was to be "distributed annually in the form of prizes to those who during the preceding year have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind."

The list below shows the Nobel Prize amount in Swedish kronor (SEK) through the years, the monetary value per December 2007 in Swedish kronor (SEK) and the value in % compared to the original amount in 1901.

The Nobel Prize amount for 2008 is set at Swedish kronor (SEK) 10 million per full Nobel Prize.

Below the list is a diagram comparing the nominal Nobel Prize amount since 1901 with its real value in 2007 terms.

Nomination

Nomination for the Nobel Prizes

Each year the respective Nobel Committees send individual invitations to thousands of members of academies, university professors, scientists from numerous countries, previous Nobel Laureates, members of parliamentary assemblies and others, asking them to submit candidates for the Nobel Prizes for the coming year. These nominators are chosen in such a way that as many countries and universities as possible are represented over time.
